Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, there lived a fishing family on the coast of the Sumatra region. The family consists of father, mother and a son who is named Malin Kundang. Due to the poor financial condition of the family, the father decided to make a living in a foreign country by wading through the vast ocean.
So the Malin and his mother stayed in their hut. A week, two weeks, a month, two months and even 1 year longer, Malin's father did not return to his hometown. So that his mother had to replace Malin's father to earn a living. Malin is considered a smart kid but a bit mischievous. He often chased chickens and hit them with a broom. One day when Malin was chasing a chicken, he tripped over a rock and hit his right arm with a stone. The wound became a scar on his arm and could not go away.
After growing up, Malin Kundang felt sorry for his mother who worked hard to make a living to raise himself. He thought of earning a living in a foreign country with the hope that when he returned to his hometown, he would have become a very rich man. Malin was attracted by the invitation of a merchant ship captain who was once poor and has now become a very rich man.
Malin Kundang expressed his meaning to his mother. His mother initially disagreed with Malin Kundang's intentions, but because Malin continued to insist, Mrs. Malin Kundang finally agreed even though with a heavy heart. After preparing sufficient supplies and equipment, Malin immediately headed to the dock accompanied by his mother. "My son, if you have succeeded and become a well-off person, don't forget your mother and your hometown, son," said Mrs. Malin Kundang with tears in her eyes.
The ship that Malin was riding was getting farther and farther, accompanied by a wave of Mrs. Malin Kundang's hand. While on the ship, Malin Kundang learned a lot about shipping from experienced crew. On the way, suddenly the ship that was riding Malin Kundang was attacked by pirates. All merchandise merchants who were on the ship seized by pirates. Even most of the crew and people who were on the ship were killed by pirates. Malin Kundang was very lucky that he was not killed by the pirates, because when the incident happened, Malin immediately hid in a small room covered by wood.
Malin Kundang was adrift in the middle of the sea, until finally the ship he was traveling on was stranded on a beach. With the remaining strength, Malin Kundang walked to the village closest to the beach. Arriving at the village, Malin Kundang was helped by the community in the village after previously telling what had happened to him. The village where Malin was stranded was a very fertile village. With his tenacity and persistence at work, Malin gradually managed to become a wealthy man. He has many merchant ships with a crew of more than 100 people. After becoming wealthy, Malin Kundang married a girl to become his wife.
News of Malin Kundang, who had become rich and married, also reached Malin Kundang's mother. Malin Kundang's mother felt grateful and very happy that her child had succeeded. Since then, Malin Kundang's mother goes to the dock every day, waiting for her child to return to her hometown.
After a long marriage, Malin and his wife sailed in a large and beautiful ship accompanied by many of the ship's crew and bodyguards. Malin Kundang's mother, who was waiting for her child every day, saw the very beautiful ship, entered the harbor. He saw two people standing on the deck of the ship. He was sure that it was his son Malin Kundang and his wife who were standing.
Malin Kundang got off the ship. He was welcomed by his mother. After getting close enough, his mother saw the wounds on the man's right arm, the more convinced her mother that the one she was approaching was Malin Kundang. "Malin Kundang, my son, why did you go for so long without sending news?", He said, hugging Malin Kundang. But, what happened next? Malin Kundang immediately let go of his mother's embrace and pushed her down.
"Women don't know themselves, just casually claiming to be my mother," said Malin Kundang to his mother. Malin Kundang pretended not to recognize his mother, because he was ashamed of his old mother wearing tattered clothes. "That woman is your mother?" Asked the wife of Malin Kundang. "No, he is just a beggar who pretends to be my mother in order to get my property," said Malin to his wife. Hearing the statement and being mistreated by her child, Malin Kundang's mother was very angry. He did not expect his son to be a disobedient child. Because of his mounting anger, Malin's mother raised her hand, saying "Oh God, if he is my son, I swear he becomes a stone". Not long after, the wind rumbled loudly and a fierce storm came to destroy Malin Kundang's ship. After that Malin Kundang's body slowly became stiff and over time it finally became a rock.
